Don’t Let Bad Smells Ruin Your Day

Image
View more We know how essential oils and pleasant aromas can improve our mood, but in my experience, bad smells have just as much ability to put me in a bad mood as good smells have to put me in a good mood. You know what I mean? When the kitchen trash smells super ripe, or the car has been sitting in the hot sun and baking in the dirty sock stench, or you accidentally leave rotten food in the fridge and have to clean it out…Yuck. When I smell something stinky like that, it just puts me in a bad mood. Taking the garbage out is one of my least favorite chores because of the stench. If my car smells, I feel like I end up smelling musty when I drive it. When I’m traveling, if my shoes are smelly in my bag, they make all my clothes smell bad, and it puts me in a bad mood for my whole trip. Being in a bad mood disrupts everything in my life: how I connect with others, how I handle stress, how I am able to do my job, etc. I’m a writer, and the ability to think creati...

Freshness in a Flash with Long-Term Benefits

View more The modern society we live in is one of instant gratification. Half of us live as fully as possible into the instant gratification life with no regrets. We like our information instantaneous and are never out of arms reach of our phones. We are fans of fast and pre-made food because there is so much more we can do with our time than cooking food ourselves. We prefer quick fixes to things that take time to work because we can always switch up our approach later on if necessary. We’re always two steps ahead of any situation. We don’t roll with the tide; we are the tide. We are multi-tasking professionals who never waste time simply sitting in traffic when we could be listening to a podcast or audiobook (which we downloaded at lightning-fast speed). View more The other half of us mourn the “good ol’ days” when things were homemade and we had more patience as a collective society. We like to cook our meals—and we maybe even grow our own f...

The Fragrance/Memory Connection

Image
View more The other day, I was driving with the windows rolled down when I passed a city crew cutting the grass in the medians. The wind was blowing loose hair from my ponytail against my cheeks. I had my left elbow out the window and I could feel the sun on my skin.  I was going over my grocery list in my head at the time because I was on my way to the store. I was thinking my way through the store, thinking about where I would be able to find various items on my list. I was thinking so intently about going to the grocery store that the trip there was completely automatic. My mind was on the task I would be accomplishing in the immediate future. But as I passed the mowers and trimmers in the median, the fragrance of fresh cut grass with a light aroma of gasoline from the equipment came through my window. And in an instant, I was 15 years old and sitting in the bleachers of my home field softball diamond. The school day had just ended—one of the last few days ...

May is mental health awareness month. A little bit of aromatherapy each day might help.

Image
View more May is mental health awareness month and here at The Gift of Scent, we have been personally affected by the impact of mental health challenges on ourselves, as well as family and friends. And though we are not doctors, or associated with any medical fields, we are people acting in concert to create positive fragrance experiences with scents from plants that have been reported to lead to better well-being.   Since 1949, the  Mental Health America Association  has dedicated the month of May to campaign on mental health awareness. This year, MHA renewed its 2020 mission to provide  Tools 2 Thrive,  providing practical tools “that everyone can use to improve their mental health and increase their resiliency regardless of their personal situation.” The site features rich resource...

How Do You Honor a Memory?

Image
View more This Memorial Day season , I’ve been thinking a lot about how we honor the memories of people we love. I keep thinking of the line in the Mackelmore song, “Glorious” that goes, “I heard you die twice, once when they bury you in the grave / And the second time is the last time that somebody mentions your name.” My grandpa died when I was 9 years old. My aunt made quilts out of his shirts for each of his kids’ families. View more Our quilt still smelled like Grandpa for a few months after he died. I remember hugging it and feeling like I could feel my Grandpa hugging me back. Now, more than 20 years after he died, whenever we pull that quilt out, we talk about Grandpa. Sometime later, we were at a home decor store, and we found a candle that smelled just like Grandpa. We bought one for everyone in the family so they could remember Grandpa through the fragrance. I don’t remember what brand the candle was, but I can still remember th...
