Reed Diffuser or Essential Oil Burner

Essential oil diffusers are designed specifically to safely get the oils into the air for your smelling pleasure (as well as to experience countless other benefits!). To find out the details of how these guys work, check out this post.

Put simply, an essential oil burner does just what it says it will do – burn your essential oil. Not really what we are looking for when it comes to our health. Essential oils are in direct contact with heat in an oil burner. When essential oils are exposed to heat this leads to oxidation which alters the chemical make-up of the essential oils.

Aromatherapy Burners vs. Diffusers — Which is Better?

As an aromatherapy expert, people are constantly asking me which is better — burners or diffusers.  Personally, I’ve always worked with burners and had great results. However, all of these questions made me wonder if I was missing out on something.  Is it possible that I could have made my aromatherapy experiences even better over the years by using a diffuser instead of a burner? That’s when I decided it was time to set out on a quest for the truth!

Here’s what I already knew:

An aromatherapy diffuser (also called a “nebulizer”) spritzes a mist of essential oils around the room.  A burner, on the other hand, heats up the essential oils so that they evaporate and fill the room. Look around the web, and you’ll see lots websites that claim diffusers are better because they break down the molecules in essential oils and make them smaller. However, this isn’t true — and this was only the first important piece of information I learned from my research! What really happens is that the diffuser takes a liquid that’s chock full of essential oils and turns it into tiny droplets so that it has an easier time floating through the air in your room.  But just because the droplets are physically smaller doesn’t mean that the molecules inside of them are smaller.  The truth is, their molecular structure doesn’t change one bit! So, what about the burners? Aromatherapy burners are two –tier objects, with a top bowl –like section for putting the water and essential oil, and a lower section for the teal-light candle which heats the water above.  As the candle heats the water, the essential oils and water evaporate. Essential oils don’t burn.

In this article we’re going to go over some of the differences between an essential oil burner and an essential oil diffuser. Most people who use essential oils for their therapeutic benefits will be looking for an essential oil diffuser. This is because diffusers will disperse the oil into the air without using any heat. A burner on the other hand almost always uses a candle usually a tea light to heat up the oil. Once it’s heated up it diffuses it’s scent throughout the room, just like a candle. For those looking for therapeutic benefits from essential oils, this can be a big turn-off. Any time you heat an essential oil you risk damaging the molecules in it. If you’re looking for the therapeutic benefits from essential oils, you want the oil undamaged as it diffuses into the air.

Essential oil burners are still great for adding an interesting ambience to your room. They look really nice and the soft lighting from the candles are perfect for dark corners that might not get enough light. Essential oil burners that use tea lights are great because you don’t need to plug them into the wall. You can easily set them on a higher shelf or cabinet that is out of the reach of pets or children.

When you were using an essential oil burner it is possible to customize the smell that you want the oils to add to your room. Since you can use varying amounts of different kinds of essential oils the possibilities are endless. Essential oil gift sets come in packages that have anywhere from 6 to 24 different essential oils. If you wanted to you could even combine them in a way that reflected the season outdoors. For example you could look for things like nutmeg and cinnamon to use in fall and maybe a lighter, fruit scent for spring and summer.
