Figuring out how much to spend adds another layer of difficulty in the decision making. Guests want to give a wonderful gift, but budget can be an issue, especially if you’re a younger guest. To learn why do you select a handcrafted candle as wedding gifts, keep reading-

Next, to DIY projects, my second favorite type of article to write is a Top 10 list. Especially when it is a new topic I haven’t covered yet, and that is exactly what this article is. Today I will be teaching you about Woodwick candles, as well as the 10 best ones to buy.

Woodwick is a type of candle that was designed and is manufactured by one company, the Virgina Candle Company. They are the only ones who make this specific type of candle and they got its name from how the wick is made. While most other candles are made with traditional cotton wicks, these are made with an organic wood wick that is much cleaner and has several benefits over the traditional candles.

I personally didn’t know much about them until recently, and they aren’t as well known as most candles are. They were created back in the 1990s, so they haven’t been around nearly as long as most candle products. That’s why I wanted to create this article and list. Here you will find everything you need to know about what sets these candles apart from other ones, and the best that you can get. If you want to learn all of those things, make sure you stay here.

WHY WOODWICK CANDLES?
Design

There are several reasons why people buy Woodwick candles, besides just the fact that they are unique. Most of these reasons are because of the design of the wick. Its design is unlike any other candles. It is much shorter, wider, and the biggest difference is that is made from organic wood.

The unique design of this wick provides several benefits. One is the unique sound it makes when it is first lit. It sounds exactly like cracking off wood in a fireplace, which many people find soothing and relaxing. It seems a much more of a natural burn than cotton.

Cleaner Burn

Going along with that natural burn part, the burn from the wood wick is a much cleaner one, as it doesn’t add any smoke whatsoever and it smells much more natural. Also, if you burn it correctly, it should make the candle last much longer, and it gives a much more consistent burn, to make sure not to waste any wax.

The Wax

Besides just the wick, the candle wax is also of the highest quality. You should know by now that we only make soy wax candles, as it is natural and good for the environment. Like we do here at CCF, they also take pride in being environmentally friendly, as they only use the purest of natural waxes and fine essential oils. They have many beautiful and natural fragrances to choose from, and most of their candles are from soy wax.

Tips on Burning It

It should be noted that these candles can be a little bit trickier to burn than other candles, as there are some specific techniques you should follow when doing so. I won’t get into them in this post, but if you would like to learn what steps to follow, check out this article, which is straight from their website. It details the differences between a good and bad burn, as you want the wax to melt from the outside in, not the other way around. It gives you tips and techniques on exactly how to make sure that happens.

Other Products They Offer

Besides just these great Woodwick candles, the Virgina Candle Company also sells several other main products. Here’s a list of them, to show you other high-quality products you may like from this company.

Ribbonwick Candles
Hearthwick Candles
Oil Diffusers
Wax Melts

THE 10 BEST
Now you have some great background knowledge on exactly what these candles are and why you should buy them. Here’s the 10 best that you should consider buying, all made and sold by the Virgina Candle Company. I included a variety of shape, sizes, and scents, so everyone will be able to find a candle they love.

Cabin Fever Soy Candle By Milkhouse

I included this candle for two reasons. One, it is made from recycled glass and its wax is beeswax and soy, the two most natural and cleanest. Also, this woodsy scented candle beautifully captures the smell of the great outdoors, with its woodsy, warm, and spicy aromas. Not only is a healthy for the environment, it also smells great.

Summer Sweets Trilogy Candle

The Summer Sweets candle is one of Woodwick’s trilogy candles, as it has three layers of different colored wax (see picture above). These clear separation in color also represent changes in fragrance, as each of these trilogy candles hav three separate aromas. This particular candle give off a build smell of summer with delicious fruits, as the fragrances included are Sweet Lime Gelato, Raspberry Yuzu, and Sparkling Orange. If you want a fruity candle, this one is definitely for you.

Cinnamon Chai Candle

I included this strong cinnamon candle because it is the fragrance of the month as of writing this, and I’ve always been a big fan of cinnamon. It’s a great quality candle and it features some strong notes of vanilla scent that add and give balance to the dominating cinnamon smell.

Linen Candles

Most people don’t necessarily associate candles with smelling of linen, but I’ve written about this fragrance several times and I’m a fan of it. It’s obviously completely different than a fruit or woods scented candle, but I find it relaxing and makes my home smell that much cleaner.

Redwood Candle

Another woodsy candle, which is my favorite category from them, this candle’s strong scents will make you feeling as if you are standing in the middle of the forest. It has a rich and clean smell that I find so relaxing and cleansing. The scents included are rich redwood with sandalwood and soft amber.

Evening Bonfire

If you have some great memories of camping or having a big bonfire with friends, this candle may be a little nostalgic for you. Many people love the smell of a good bonfire, but they hate how it gets stuck all over your clothes and hair so that you’ll smell like it. That’s the best part of having a candle with this scent, as it projects that soothing aroma, without the negative parts.

At the Beach

This candle is your tropical scented one, as it will calm and relax you with its flavors of the beach. Tropical citrus, creamy coconut, and cool sea breezes are the scents that make up this candle, giving you the feeling that your are sitting somewhere in paradise

Fireside Candle

This one is similar to the evening bonfire, but has a little bit cleaner of an aroma, which makes it one of the most popular on their site. It smells more refined and less like you are outdoors, as it has a calmer and warmer feel to it.

Cafe Sweets

Here is another trilogy candle that has three different aromas that compliment each other and gives a unique and beautiful blend. There’s nothing I like in the morning more than a nice hot cup of coffee and that’s exactly what this candle emulates. It’s strong combo of Vanilla Bean, Caramel and Biscotti give in a warming and awakening scent of a mocha in the morning. Perfect for a morning scent as you get ready for what the day is about to bring.

Gentle Rain

The last candle on this list yet another trilogy candle, as that is by far my favorite variety of the wood wick candles. This candle is a warming spring or early morning candle, as it smells of a fresh rainfall or a cold morning. The three essential oils that make up this candle are Dew Drops, Water Garden, and Aegean Sea. Another great clean smelling nature candle.

You can also choose some candle with fragrance oils. Here’s some basic information about fragrance oils and essential oils to understand the difference-

Fragrance oils are manufactured scents that give a great smell to some of our favorite candles. Although they are artificial, they emulate natural aromas and are used as they are much stronger. They are used most commonly in soaps, make-up, perfumes, and of course candles.

This list will definitely be subjective, as everyone will have their own opinion on what are the best smelling. Therefore, the list doesn’t rank these sense in any type of order, as the saying goes, “beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” Here’s some background information first about these powerful oils

FRAGRANCE OILS VS. ESSENTIAL OILS – UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENCE

Before I jump into this Top 10 list, I want briefly to explain the differences between these two oils. Many people get these confused, but the differences are easy to describe. As I briefly touched on in the introduction, fragrance oils are artificial, while essential oils are natural. Examples of essential oils include rosemary, peppermint, lavender, and much more. They are not only used for their beautiful fragrances, but also for medical benefits.

The point of fragrance oils is to imitate these essential ones. So, you may be asking why not to just use the essential ones, as they are more natural and therefore take no work to create. They are pure distillations of flowers, herbs, roots, or resins, what could get better than that, right? However, there some negatives to these oils

The first, and to many most important, is that they can be quite expensive and harder to come by. If you are mass producing candles, you will want to take the cheaper route so you can sell them for a profit. Another major drawback of these natural fragrances is that the quality depends on the crop; no two plants will have the exact same potency, so you will have some inconsistencies.

Looking at those disadvantages, and you can see why fragrance oils are manufactured. Most people can’t tell the difference between them and their natural counterparts, they are much cheaper to manufacture, the smell will always be consistent, and they are much stronger in smell. These reasons are why fragrance oils are so popular today for use in almost anything scented, especially candles.

Although fragrance oils originally started out as completely natural smells, now they have begun to transform into creating entirely new smells. They are still are derived from natural products, but instead have several smells blended into one that creates a unique, incredible new smell. The best part about this is that there are almost limitless amounts of possibilities for creating these. It also is really an art, as it shows how skilled some of these candle makers can be.

So, now that you have some basic knowledge about these types of oils, continue to read for the list of the 10 best of these oils for candles.

THE 10 BEST
Now, you have to smell these scents yourself to really get a feel for them, but I will do my best to explain them. I’ve included a wide variety of oils that cover different types of scents, from fruit based to pine needles.

In the list, I also included the flashpoint in Fahrenheit of each oil. The flashpoint is the temperature where it will combust if exposed to a flame, so keep that in mind while reading this list.

Love Spell

Love Spell has been a popular fragrance oil for about a decade, and for a good reason. You will find many variations of this scent, so I will go into the most common. This is a fresh oil with a combination of many fruits. It strongest smell comes from grapefruit, clementines, and strawberries. It also includes hints of peach, black currant, and rose petals. It is non-GMO, soy, alcohol, and gluten free. It can be used in candles or anything with non-contact to skin, up to 100%. Its flashpoint is 175 °F.

Very Vanilla

Vanilla has been a popular scent in candles for nearly as long as scented candles have existed. It’s a popular natural scent that almost everyone finds pleasing. This fragrance builds off of this popularity, as it is almost entirely vanilla. What makes it a fragrance oil is that a small hint of cream is added to give the blend a unique twist while still maintaining the ever so popular vanilla.

Clean Cotton

You may not think of cotton as having a beautiful smell, but this oil gives a sort of nostalgic smell to it of fresh clothes right out of the laundry. It smells heavily of dryer sheets but also has a very natural feel to it. A unique part of this is that it is blended with some fragrance and essential oils at the same time. The oils used are lemon, lime, green apple, clean ozone, violet, cedar, jasmine, lavender, and lily. Its flashpoint is 210 °F.

Aspen Winter

If you grew up with a snowy winter time and the smell of pine trees all around you, this fragrance will definitely bring back memories. It is a festive combination of bay leaf, fresh pine, red cinnamon and with some hints of various holiday fruits. This is perfect holiday or winter oil, and guests to your home may mention how pristine and how much it smells like nature. It has a flashpoint of 200 °F.

Apple Cinnamon

The title is pretty self-explanatory about what is included in this oil; delicious red mac apples and swirls of cinnamon added throughout give this a sensuous, clean, and strong aroma. It will remind you of a fresh, warm apple pie just set out to cool. There are a lot of very popular apple based fragrances, but in my opinion, this is one of the most relaxing and crisp. It also has a flashpoint of 200 degrees and is perfectly designed for household candles.

Balance and Grow

Designed specifically to use during a yoga or meditation routine, this amazing creation will keep you balanced and focused. It has a perfect blend of honey, various citrus blends, and infused with lavender and Echinacea blooms. Also lightly added are small amounts of vanilla and honeycomb. With a 175 degree flashpoint, this fragrance will calm you and make you much more relaxed.

Peach Nectar

This fruity aroma is great for the summer time and will give you energy and uplift your mood. The scent of delicious fresh peach dominates the fragrance, and it is also blended perfectly with a hint of various tropical fruits. Having a flashpoint of 212 degrees, this scent would be perfect for a household candle used to freshen up the air.

Citron and Mandarin

This oil combines some of the brightest and best summer time fruits. Orange and grapefruit dominate the smell, giving it a beautifully crafted citrus smell. Add a hint of lemon, and this gives it a well-balanced fragrance that is great for anywhere you’ll use a candle.

This fragrance oil is infused with natural essential oils, including grapefruit, orange, and lemon oil. A low flashpoint of 147 °F means you should be aware not to let the candle become too hot.

Coconut Lime

Burn a candle with this aroma, and you may start to feel like you are laying on a beach somewhere. It is a bright summer scent that can give you great confidence and a mood boost. Besides just the coconut and lime, other natural oils that are included are lime and orange. Flashpoint: 200 °F.

Hazelnut Coffee

For those cold or rainy days trapped inside, this is a perfect scent. The coffee gives you a warm feeling, as that is what people naturally associate coffee with. It also can give you a sense of increased motivation. The hazelnut compliments and counterbalances the coffee very well, giving a sweeter, lighter feel to it. Add to it a hint of cinnamon and cream and you are talking about a delicious mocha wrapped into a candle. As well, it does have a fairly light flashpoint, sitting at about 152 degrees.

WHAT WE USE HERE AT CHICAGO CANDLE FACTORY
So know that I have included a list of all the best available, you may be asking what we use here. Here’s what the owner of the shop has to say about the fragrance oils used in the shop.

I would like to tell you a bit about the fragrance oils I use and what I tell our customers.

I tell the customers there are no chemicals or phthalates and that is true. I only select fragrance oils that meet my criteria. The fragrance oils I choose can all be made to use lotions or soaps as well. This means they are safe to touch the skin. In the over 7000 candles that have gone out, I have never had a single complaint about irritation. This means a lot to me.

I only bring this up because the tone of the article doesn’t touch on the cleanliness of them. It makes them sound like a cheap alternative to essential oils. What I say is that they are “built on essential oils” to dilute the oil, but it is done without chemicals or phthalates. This brings the cost down while maintaining the standards and quality of the rest of the product.
