Reed Diffuser – Fragrant Your Home

Reed diffusers are a constant fragrant companion for your home. Long lasting and with bountiful scent options available, they are a fabulous way to ensure your interior spaces are always perfumed and create an inviting environment for guests.

Reed diffusers are an elegant, flame-free way to spread your favorite home fragrance throughout your environment. That’s because reed diffusers require no heat source to release wonderful aroma, making them safe for use in classrooms, offices and homes—especially those with small children.
What is a Reed Diffuser?
Reed diffusers are a great way to add constant fragrance to your home. The diffuser reeds soak up the fragrance oil and disperse the scent into the air. They last until all the fragrance oil evaporates. Diffusers work really well in places where you always want it to smell nice but can’t keep an eye on a candle. Some great locations are in a foyer so you and your guests are greeted with a beautiful fragrance when you walk in, or in a powder room, closet or basement where you always want it to smell nice but you can’t always keep an eye on a candle.
How to Set Up a Reed Diffuser
Some diffusers are packaged with the oil already in the vessel. If that is the case, simply remove the stopper and insert the reeds. If the oil is packaged in a separate bottle, add just a few ounces of the oil to the vessel and keep the remaining oil in the bottle in a cool, dark cabinet. The oil will stay fresh longer in a tightly sealed container. When necessary, simply add a few more ounces of oil to the diffuser vessel to maintain the fragrance.
Use caution when inserting the reeds as sometimes the level of the fragrance oil can raise enough to spill out the top of the vessel. It always a good idea to set up a diffuser on a non-porous surface and clean any oil drips off the vessel before placing on a delicate counter top.
Tips on How to Use a Reed Diffuser
- Place your diffuser in a high traffic area where the fragrance will disperse throughout the room with air circulation. Another great spot is just inside the room near the door so you pick up the scent as you enter the room. In many cases, think of a diffuser as a bouquet of flowers – you’ll smell the fragrance as you walk by, but it won’t necessarily fill the room with fragrance.
- Flip the reeds for more fragrance. You can flip a few reeds every few days or all the reeds everyday. Keep in mind the more reeds you flip and the more often you flip them, the faster the fragrance oil will evaporate.
- Use caution when flipping the reeds. Flip the reeds over a wastebasket or sink and be sure to clean the vessel of any fragrance oil drips before placing on a delicate counter top.
- Use a coaster or plate under your diffuser to keep any oil drips from damaging a precious counter top.
- Flip all of the reeds on all of your diffusers before leaving for vacation. When you return home you’ll be welcomed by an inviting fragrance rather than a stale, stuffy home.
- Pick the right size diffuser for your room. Diffusers are just like candles – the larger the diffuser, the greater the fragrance so these will work well in big rooms. For example, Lafco diffusers work well in large spaces. Smaller diffusers work well in smaller spaces like powder rooms and small bedrooms. For example, the mini Voluspa Japonica diffusers work well in small spaces.
- If you buy refill oil for your diffuser, clean out the vessel with soap and water and let it dry completely before you refill it. It’s better to start with fresh oil than continuously add to old oil.
- When you change the oil, change the reeds. Reeds get dusty and clogged over time and lose efficiency. Not all reeds are the same. Manufacturers select the optimum reeds for their oil so it’s best to stick with the same brand. For example, buy K. Hall diffuser replacement reeds for K. Hall diffuser refill oil.
- Make your own diffuser with a vessel you have at home. Any small, non-porous container with a narrow opening (like a small wine bottle) will work well. Buy diffuser refill oil and a set of reeds and set up as described above and you’re good to go!

One of the easy ways that you can ensure that your personal space or room is constantly scented is through the use of reed diffusers. When you use it, you will ensure that your personal space is filled with your favorite fragrance without having to contend with the worry of that comes with the use of an open flame or even a candle.
What are reed diffusers and how do they work?
Reed diffusers are extremely popular in home fragrance right now. They are very simple to use; reeds are inserted into a glass bottle or glass jar of scented diffuser oil, the reeds soak up the scent and emit a pleasant aroma around your home – easy!
Unlike candles, reed diffusers are flame free and do not require any heat. They disperse scent into the air naturally. No flame means no soot and more importantly, no risk of fire! This makes reed diffusers a more practical scent solution for some homes.
What reeds do we use in our diffusers?
We use ‘Porex eReeds’ which are innovatively designed for a high-performance fragrance throw as the fragrance is diffused along the entire length of the reed. The reed has a porous structure that provides a controlled rate of fragrance release.
How long do reed diffusers last?
There are many factors that contribute to how long the oils last. Air conditioning, heating, closed doors, open doors, dehumidifiers, etc. However, we have found that our 100ml diffuser oil should last for approximately 3-4 months, but ultimately this will depend on the temperature of your home.
Can I top up my diffuser with a different scent and use the same reeds?
Once reeds have been used for a certain scent, you cannot use them for another scent. The scent that is already absorbed into your reeds will mix with the new scent and could produce undesirable scent combinations, so we don’t recommend doing so.
I have topped up my diffuser, do I need new reeds?
If you have topped up your diffuser with a refill and the reeds are completely saturated, or if they are no longer diffusing/giving off scent, they may have become clogged with dust. Best thing to do is to replace them with new reeds to get the scent rolling again. We suggest doing this after your first refill has finished, time wise that should be about 6 months of use from one set of reeds.
My reed diffuser doesn’t smell as strongly as it used to even though there’s still plenty of oil in the bottle. What can I do?
You could try flipping the reeds, this simple re-positioning can help to give the diffusion process a little boost. However, don’t flip them too often as the more often you flip your reeds the faster the oil will disperse. You could also give the bottle a very gentle “swirl” or two, this can also help to blend the ingredients of the oil and strengthen the scent.
OR
As we mentioned previously, overtime the reeds become completely saturated and can become clogged with dust. If you still have oil in the bottle and flipping the reeds doesn’t seem to help, consider replacing your reeds.
