Spring Cleaning with Essential Oils

This year, I can’t WAIT for Spring to arrive. It has been a long, cold winter. After the holiday cheer and the new year refreshing and the cozy-by-the-fire feelings wore off, my home felt heavy with cold, negative energy.

I enjoy snow and the chill in the air for a few weeks—or even a few months—but where I live, when the wind chill turns frigid and it’s snowing every other day, I’m sick of it (and seriously thinking about moving south) by the time the month of March arrives. And being sick of the weather always makes me feel grumpy, cooped up, and pessimistic.

When the first day of Spring finally rolls around this month, I’m planning to deep clean and freshen everything in my home. Rather than buy a bunch of heavy-duty chemical cleaners that smell too strong and make me feel like I have to wear a gas mask just to use them, I’m simply going to use Belle Aroma® Essential Oils with my regular cleaners to add a little boost to my cleaning routine and clear out that stale winter energy.

Essential Oil Spring Cleaning Tips

Trash Cans: After a few months of heavy comfort food, my trash can smells stale and gross. I clean it out as normal, but once it’s clean, I put a couple drops of Sweet Orange or Lavender Essential Oil on a paper towel and put it in the bottom of the trash can before I put the new garbage bag in. The essential oil helps keep the can smelling fresher longer.

Refrigerator: My refrigerator is also smelling a little musty. Put a few drops of Sweet Orange or Lemongrass essential oil on the felt pad in your ScentSlides™ Unplugged and put it in your fridge door to refresh it.

Mop: When you need to get all the snow, salt, and sand off your floors, don’t forget to add some essential oil for a super refresh. After testing the oil and cleaning solution on a small area to ensure it doesn’t discolor the flooring at all, add a couple drops of Sweet Orange or Lemongrass essential oil to your floor mop to give your floors a little shine and a refreshing aroma. (Note: When using essential oils, be sure to keep animals and children off the floors until they are completely dry.)

Room Spray: Spray away that negative energy! Get a glass spray bottle, fill most of the way with water, and add 10 drops of your favorite essential oil to spray around the room for an essential oil air freshening spritz. Be sure to use a glass bottle, as plastic can be corroded by essential oils.

Laundry: Refresh your laundry by putting a couple drops of your favorite essential oil (I like Lavender, Clary Sage, or Rose Geranium) on your wool dryer balls before you throw them in the dryer with your clothes! They’ll come out smelling fresh and lightly fragrant.

Sink and Disposal: I always notice a little bit of a sulfur aroma in my sinks as everything starts to thaw out in the Spring. I just put a few drops of Sweet Orange, Lavender, or Peppermint in each drain to refresh it. And to clean your sinks, sprinkle baking soda into the sink, put a few drops of essential oil on top of the baking soda, and scrub the sinks with a damp sponge! The baking soda and essential oil combo neutralizes odors and the scrubbing action of the gritty baking soda helps remove any scum build-up in the sink and drain.
